How burn bans work
A burn ban is a temporary order that prohibits most outdoor burning — brush piles, trash, bonfires and often campfires — while conditions are dry and windy. In most states county officials (a county judge, commissioners or board of supervisors) issue the order, and state forestry agencies collect them on a map.
A Red Flag Warning from the National Weather Service is different: it isn't a ban, but it means humidity, wind and dry fuels make any fire spread fast. Don't burn during one.
Bans start and end with little notice, so Burn Ban Today checks every source each hour and keeps a history of changes for every county.
